The conference «Recent Developments in The Maghreb Region: Are Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia on a Road to Democracy?» happened on April 29th at NOVA FCSH, and was organized by IPRI-NOVA and the European Endowment for Democracy. The mobilization of underrepresented groups in society and the role of social media were some of the topics discussed in the conference.

The conference was attended by students, researchers, journalists, and political activists.

The first panel was moderated by Madalena Resende (IPRI-NOVA). The mobilization of underrepresented groups in the Maghreb region was analyzed by Arbia Jebouli (Free Sight Organisation, Tunisia), Sadek Benjoudi (Banquet de Platon, Algeria), and Safaa Issaad (Mouvement Clarté Ambition Courage, Morocco).

The second panel debated the role of social media in fostering democracy. Zyna Oueled Saad (Youth Can, Tunisia) and Michael Meyer-Resende (Democracy Reporting International, Germany) participated in this panel. The moderator was the journalist Cristina Peres, from Expresso.

 

After the conference, some of the speakers were interviewed by the press about the growing influence of civil society groups and social transformation in the Maghreb region. Their comments are available here (in Portuguese).
